Why use this instead of a file

A file exported from another email tool usually loses who unsubscribed, whose address bounced and who never confirmed. Email those people and your first campaign bounces and gets reported, which hurts every email you send after it. The Mailchimp, Klaviyo and Brevo apps read your list straight from those tools, so that information comes with it, along with the date each person signed up.

Before you start: get a key

You'll need an API key from the other tool. It only needs to read your list.

  • Mailchimp: Account → Extras → API keys, then Create A Key.
  • Klaviyo: Settings → API keys → Create Private API Key, with read access.
  • Brevo: click your name at the top right, then SMTP & API → API keys → Generate a new API key.

Bringing your list across

Bring your list in has an app for each tool.

  1. Click Apps in the menu. Bring your list in has an app for each tool. While your People page is empty, it has a link there too.
  2. Open the app for the tool your list is in.
  3. Paste the key and click Read my list.
  4. If the account has more than one list, pick the one you send your newsletter to.
  5. Check what was found. You'll see how many people are Ready to email, Opted out before, Dead addresses and Never confirmed. Nothing has been created yet.
  6. Click Choose what comes over and pick the extras you want, such as their segments and tags or their extra fields.
  7. Click Bring them over.

Large lists come across in the background, so you can close the page. Open the app's page in Apps again to see how it's going.

What happens to each person

  • Ready to email: they arrive subscribed, with the date they signed up if the other tool kept it.
  • Opted out before: they arrive unsubscribed and won't be emailed. They can sign up again through one of your forms.
  • Dead addresses: addresses that bounced or reported spam arrive with their emails stopped and are never emailed.
  • Never confirmed: people who were asked to confirm and didn't, or who bought something without signing up. They come in, but you can't email them. Bringing them over is optional.

An import can only make someone's status stricter. If a person has already unsubscribed from you here, a subscribed record in the other tool won't change that.

If your plan can't hold everyone, you're told before you start, and the people you can email come over first.

Segments and fields

Each segment or tag becomes a list here with the same people in it. Fields such as birthday or company become details.

Afterwards

  • The key is only kept while the import runs. Delete it in the other tool once the import has finished.
  • Nothing is changed in your account at the other tool.
  • Bringing people across doesn't start any of your drips.
