How we think about AI

Our AI Stance

We use AI to make email marketing simpler and more creative, and the decisions stay with you. We’re honest about what AI is, and what it costs.

Our principles

What we believe about AI

AI should save you time and leave the decisions to you

We use AI to suggest subject lines and draft emails, and Cruise uses it to write a regular email for you. Your voice and your decisions stay yours.

We tell you when AI is involved

When AI writes something for you, we say so, and you decide what to use. Cruise sends without asking only if you leave it on Send it.

AI has a real cost

Running AI models uses energy, and the data centres behind them use large amounts of water to stay cool. We don’t claim to offset that, because nobody can do so truthfully yet. Instead, 1% of every paid subscription goes to water efficiency work, and it has been part of our prices since day one.

Your data stays your data

We send the AI only what the job needs, things like your brand description, product details, images, and the words of the email. The people on your list are never sent to it, apart from any details in a data set you switch on for Cruise yourself, such as your form answers. Your content is never used to train any model, ours or anyone else's. Every AI call is logged so we can see exactly what went out. If you connect your own AI assistant to your account, it can read what your API key allows, names and addresses included, and that assistant's provider decides how it's used.

Human review matters

AI can generate, but it can’t understand your audience the way you do. Subject lines, drafts and suggestions are always yours to review, edit, and approve before you send. Cruise can also run on full autopilot. If you’d rather see every email first, switch it to Ask me first and each email waits for your approval.

Accessible to everyone

AI shouldn’t be a premium feature locked behind enterprise pricing. Every SplashSend plan includes AI tools, and the free plan gets 20 designs a month from Describe & Build. Cruise comes with the paid plans.

Where we use AI in SplashSend

1

Subject lines: describe what the email is about and AI suggests a few subject lines, using your brand details. You pick one, change it or write your own.

2

Email drafts: Describe & Build writes a first draft of an email from a sentence or two about what it's for, laid out as a design in your brand colours. You can change any of it in the designer before it goes.

3

Cruise: when Cruise is switched on, AI writes and designs an email from your products, photographs and notes, and it goes out on the days you choose. Switch on Ask me first and each email waits for your approval.

4

Ask Your Crew: before you send, a panel of AI readers can look at your email and tell you whether they would open it and what they made of the words and pictures. You decide what, if anything, to change.

5

Photo labels: in Media, AI can suggest labels for a photo. You choose which to keep, and Cruise uses them to pick pictures.

6

Check-ins: if you switch on check-ins on the Cruise page, an email written by AI asks what's new in your business, and AI reads your reply to see what Cruise can write about.

7

Your voice: on the Cruise page, AI can read what you've written in SplashSend and draft a note on how you sound, which you can change before it's saved.

8

We’re always upfront about what’s AI-generated and what isn’t. If a feature uses AI, you’ll know.

9

Apart from background removal in the image editor, which uses a model on our own servers, all of it runs on Anthropic's Claude models, called from our servers with only the material for the job. Our Privacy Policy says exactly what is sent and where it goes.
