Website tracking tells SplashSend which products people look at and put in their basket on your website. Drips need it for basket and browsing reminders. Shopify doesn't tell any app when someone looks at a product, so browsing reminders need website tracking even when your Shopify store is connected.
Switch it on in Shopify
- Open Apps in the menu, then Website tracking.
- Click Open theme editor. Your Shopify theme editor opens in a new tab.
- Find App embeds in the sidebar, switch on SplashSend's Pop-ups and tracking, and save.
There's nothing to paste. It stays on when you update your theme. If you change to a different theme, switch it on there too. These steps appear once your Shopify store is connected.
Add it to another website
For a WooCommerce, Squarespace or Wix site, or one you built yourself, you paste one line of code into the site.
- Go to Setup → Business address and check that Website URL is your website's address. Tracking only follows links in your emails that go to that website or to a connected Shopify store.
- Open Apps, then Website tracking. If your site asks visitors about cookies, switch on Wait for my cookie banner first, as described under Cookie consent below. Then click Copy under the code.
- Paste it into your site before the closing </head> tag. Most website builders have a setting for adding code to the header of every page.
- Open your website once, so SplashSend sees the code is there. Tracking follows links in the emails you send after that, not in ones sent before.
With a Shopify store connected, the line is under Or paste it in yourself, for a site that isn't your shop, such as a blog.
Check it's working
Make sure your own email address is one of your people. Once tracking is on and you've opened your site once, send yourself a campaign with a link to your website. Test emails don't work for this, and nor do emails sent before tracking was on. If your site shows a cookie banner, accept it. Click the link, look at a product, then open Website tracking in Apps again. The number of events recorded goes up. Until the first one, it says Nothing recorded yet.
What it records, and for whom
- The products someone looks at. On Shopify it reads the shop's own product details, and on other sites the product details your pages already publish for search engines.
- Products added to the basket. This is recorded by itself on Shopify, and on other sites whose add-to-basket button sends to an address containing /cart/add. On WooCommerce, Squarespace, Wix and most other sites, a developer needs to record it with
splash.track("added_to_cart", …), as shown under Recording your own events in Setup. Until then, They leave items in their basket never starts.
It only recognises people who arrived by clicking a link in one of your emails, and it keeps recognising them on later visits from the same browser. A visit from anyone it doesn't recognise is ignored, and a visit never adds anyone to your list.
Cookie consent
On Shopify, tracking waits until a visitor has agreed to it. On another website, it starts straight away unless you set it to wait.
- On Shopify, it follows your store's own cookie banner, and records nothing for a visitor until Shopify says they've allowed marketing.
- On another website, switch on Wait for my cookie banner on the Website tracking page in Apps before you copy the code. Then have your banner run
splash.consent(true)when someone accepts andsplash.consent(false)when they decline. Until it does, nothing is recorded.
Pop-up forms show either way.
Using it
Start a drip with They look and don’t buy or They leave items in their basket, or on Shopify Viewed but didn’t buy. See Abandoned checkout and basket reminders.
Each view and basket addition is also saved as an event on the person, so it appears under Event name when you choose the A custom event happens trigger. Under Recording your own events, Setup shows a developer how to record other things people do on your site, and anything recorded there can start a drip. To send events from your own server, see Using the API.
