If none of the ready-made drips fits, start from a blank one and add each step yourself.

Start a blank drip

  1. Go to Drips, click New Drip, then click Blank drip.
  2. Click the name at the top to give the drip a name of your own.

Choose what starts it

The card at the top is the trigger. Click it, then choose what starts the drip in the panel on the right. The triggers are in groups:

Click the top card to choose what starts the drip.
  • People: someone subscribes, joins a list, reaches an engagement level, has a detail you keep for them change to a new value, reaches a date you keep for them such as a birthday, fills in one of your forms, or clicks a link in one of your emails.
  • Orders: an order is placed, a first or repeat order, an order ships, or someone looks at a product or leaves items in their basket without buying. The last two need website tracking.
  • Shopify: listed when your Shopify store is connected. It includes a checkout being abandoned, an order being refunded, and something a person bought before coming back into stock or dropping in price.
  • Your systems: an event your own systems send to SplashSend by name, through the API or the website script, such as one saying a workshop was booked. If you have a data set with dates in it, you can also start a drip when a row is dated today or coming up, or when a row is added to or changed in a data set you keep yourself. Only when you add them starts nobody on its own. People go in when a form's Start a drip action adds them.

For A custom event happens, pick the event from the list. An event shows there once your systems have sent it at least once.

Some triggers ask one more thing, such as which list or which engagement level. To let in only some of the people the trigger fires for, click + Add an entry condition and set a rule.

Add steps

Click a + on the line between two cards to add a step at that point.

The Add a step menu
Click a + between two cards to add a step there.
  • Send email: sends one of your designs.
  • Wait: pauses for a number of minutes, hours, days, weeks or months before the next step.
  • Condition split: sends people down Yes or No depending on a rule, such as whether they have ordered.
  • Multi-split: several paths, each with its own rule, checked from the top. Anyone who matches none of them takes the last path.
  • A/B split: puts each person on one of two paths at random, so you can compare two emails.
  • Update a detail: sets something on the person, which you can use later in a group or a condition.
  • Write to your data: adds or updates a row in a data set you keep.
  • Notify your systems: sends a message to your own systems through a webhook you have set up in Setup.
  • Exit: ends the drip for anyone who reaches it.

Setting up a condition

Click a condition card, then set the rule under Who goes down “Yes”. Choose a field, such as Has ordered or Subscription status, then how it should match and the value. Click + Add condition to add another rule, and choose ALL OF or ANY OF to say whether people must match every rule or at least one.

A condition split's rule: Has ordered is yes
A condition split sends people down Yes or No depending on the rule.

Then add steps under each path. People who don't match the rule go down No.

Moving around the canvas

Drag the background to move around, and use the zoom buttons at the bottom left. Fit shows the whole drip, and Tidy up lines the cards up again. To remove a step, click it and click Remove step at the bottom of the panel. Removing a split removes everything under it.

Saving and publishing

Your changes save as you go. A new drip stays a draft, and sends nothing, until you click Review & publish and then Publish and turn on.

Changes to a drip that is already live are saved too, but they don't reach anyone yet. The top of the canvas counts them, for example 2 unpublished changes, and the live drip carries on as it was. Click Review & publish to see what you changed and publish it. See Checking a drip and seeing how it's doing.
