Click any text in the designer to start typing. The toolbar at the bottom changes to the text controls.
Styling text
- Use − and + to change the size, or type a number. The arrow beside the number opens the preset sizes, such as Heading for a title.
- The typeface menu has seven fonts that look the same in every inbox, such as Arial and Georgia. Leave it on Default to keep the design's own typeface.
- B, I and U make text bold, italic or underlined. Select some words first to change only those. With nothing selected, they change the whole block.
- The list button turns the text into a list. Click it again to change the style, from bullets to numbers.
- The alignment button moves the text between left, centre and right.
- Pick a colour from the swatches, or open the colour picker to type a colour code or pick a colour up from the screen.
Under More, Spacing sets the line height and letter spacing, Fill adds a background colour and Padding sets the space around the words. Corners rounds the corners, which shows once the text has a fill.
Links
To link some words, select them and click the link button in the toolbar. To link a button or a picture, select it and click its link pill, which reads Add a link until it has one. A button with no link also shows Add a link on the page while you work.
In the box that opens:
- Under Where it goes, type a web address and click Set link. You can leave off the https:// part. An email address becomes a link that starts an email to that address.
- Under One of your forms, pick a form from Collect. Each person gets their own link to it, so their answers come back with their name. See Sending a form in an email.
- Under Or a standard link, pick Unsubscribe, Email preferences or View in browser.
- Remove takes a link off.
When the email is sent, a button that still has no link goes to your website address (under Website URL in Setup → Business address), or to your Shopify store if you haven't added one. With neither, the email won't send until the button has a link.
Naming a link
A button or picture link can also have a name, under Call it something, such as “Shop the sale”. A drip can then start when someone clicks that link, and a group in People can find the people who clicked it. Use the same name on links in other emails and they all count as the same link, so one drip can react to the sale button in every email you send that week.
Personal touches
Click the person icon in the text toolbar, labelled Personalise, to add something that changes for each person. It goes in as a coloured pill where your cursor is.
- Person has their first name, last name, full name and email address.
- Details has anything else you keep about people, such as a birthday or a favourite glaze.
Below those, each of your data sets has its own section, such as the weather or your opening hours. See Using live data in your emails.
When the email is sent, each person sees their own value. If someone has nothing saved, the pill is left out, so “Hi” followed by a first-name pill and a comma reads “Hi ,” for someone with no first name. Before you rely on a name, check on People how many of your people have one.
A preview you send yourself, or open on screen, fills each pill with your own details. See Check a design before it goes out.
Emoji
Click the smiley face in the text toolbar, search, for example for “sun” or “gift”, and click an emoji to add it.
