A group is a set of rules, and each rule reads like a short sentence, such as Total Orders is more than 2. This article goes through every field in the order the group editor lists them. To make a group, see Groups and lists.

Putting rules together

  • A new rule starts as Name contains. Pick a different field in the first box, and the choices in the second box change to suit it. Every rule needs a value. While one is empty, Create group stays greyed out, and a line above the buttons says which rule to fill in or remove.
  • Add condition adds another rule. Once there are two, click the word after Include people who match to switch between all of these and any of these.
  • Add another set of conditions starts a second set. Click the label between the sets to switch between Who also match…, where people must match both sets, and Also include people who…, where either set will do.
  • The sentence under your rules reads them back in words. Preview counts everyone who matches, including people who've unsubscribed or whose emails have been stopped. An email to the group only goes to the people in it you can email.
The Create group window with two sets of rules and a count of the people who match.
Two sets of rules, with the sentence that reads them back and the Preview count.

A group works out who matches each time it's used, so people move in and out as things change. Capital letters don't matter.

Person

  • Name and Email: the person's full name and email address. Choose contains, does not contain, equals, does not equal, starts with or ends with. For example, Email ends with ac.uk finds university addresses.
  • Source: how they first joined, from Manual, Import, Signup, API and Shopify, the same as the Source column in the People sheet. Import covers any file you import and a list moved from another email tool. Signup is anyone who joined through a form.
  • Status: Subscribed or Unsubscribed. Someone whose emails stopped because their address bounced still counts as Subscribed.
  • Why emails stopped: Hard bounce, Kept bouncing, Complaint or Stopped by you, which is anyone you stopped yourself with Stop all emails.
  • Date emails stopped and Date Added: is before, is after or is between the dates you pick. People whose emails were never stopped don't match Date emails stopped. Date Added is the day the person came into SplashSend, so everyone who came across when you connected Shopify shares that day. Both take fixed dates, so a group of people added in the last month won't move forward on its own.
  • Subscribed topic: has any of, has all of or has none of the topics you type, separated by commas. Type each name as it appears in Setup → Subscription topics. Someone is on a topic unless they turned it off on their preferences page, the same as when you send an email to that topic. A name that isn't one of your topics matches nobody. See Unsubscribes and preferences.

Activity

These rules count orders from your connected Shopify store and orders sent in through the API. An order that was refunded in full, voided or cancelled doesn't count.

  • Total Orders and Total Revenue: how many orders someone has placed and how much they've spent, with equals, does not equal, is more than or is less than. Someone with no orders counts as 0.
  • Last Order: the date of their latest order, with is before, is after or is between. Someone who has never ordered doesn't match.

Engagement

  • Engagement: equals or does not equal Engaged, Cooling off, Gone quiet, Inactive or New, worked out fresh from the last 90 days each time. See What the engagement levels mean.
  • Engagement Score: the score behind the level, from 0 to 100, worked out fresh from the last 90 days each time. Choose equals, does not equal, is more than or is less than. Engaged is 80 or more, Cooling off 50 to 79, Gone quiet 20 to 49 and Inactive under 20, so Gone quiet is a score that is more than 19 and less than 50. Someone you haven't emailed in the last 90 days is New and has no score, so they don't match any Engagement Score rule. Use Engagement equals New to find them.
  • Answer rating: the ratings people have given in your forms, such as a star rating or a 0 to 10 score, with equals, does not equal, is more than or is less than. An answer only counts when SplashSend knows who gave it, for example through the personal link in an email. Someone with several ratings matches is more than if any rating is above your number, and is less than if any is below it, so they can match both. Someone who has never given a rating doesn't match any of these, does not equal included.
  • Clicked a link: every link someone has clicked in your emails, matched against its address and the name you gave it under Call it something in the designer. Choose contains, does not contain, equals or does not equal, and use contains with part of the address, such as /sale, or a word from the link's name. Clicks that security software makes the moment an email arrives are left out. People who have never clicked anything match does not contain and does not equal, which suits a group to win back. See Words, links and personal touches.
  • Opened an email: Yes if any email from you has ever been counted as opened for them, otherwise No. A note under the rule explains that opens are a rough guide. Apple Mail can load the tracking picture when nobody has read the email, and apps that block pictures record no open at all.
A group rule, Opened an email equals Yes, with a note about how opens are counted.
Opened an email comes with a reminder that opens are a rough guide.

Shopify

These appear once your Shopify store is connected.

  • Bought from collection, Bought product type and Bought from brand: equals or does not equal one of your store's collections, product types or brands, picked from a list. A collection counts when a product someone bought is in it today.
  • Average order value: equals, does not equal, is more than or is less than an amount. Someone with no orders counts as 0.
  • Days since last order: equals, does not equal, is more than or is less than a number of days. Someone who has never ordered doesn't match.
  • Has ordered: equals Yes or No.

Details

Every detail you keep is listed under Details, including Shopify's and the columns added by Fill in details. The choices depend on the detail's type.

  • Text, Link, Email, Phone and Image: contains, does not contain, equals, does not equal, starts with or ends with. A blank detail matches does not contain and does not equal.
  • Number: equals, does not equal, is more than or is less than. A blank number matches neither is more than nor is less than.
  • Date: equals, is before, is after or is between. Type dd/mm/yyyy, or dd/mm for a date every year, so Birthday equals 15/05 finds everyone born on 15 May.
  • Yes / No: equals or does not equal, choosing Yes or No. A Yes / No detail that was never filled in shows a dash and doesn't match equals No, so use does not equal Yes to include it.
  • Dropdown: equals or does not equal one of its options.
  • List and Multi-select: has any of, has all of or has none of the values you type, separated by commas. A Multi-select suggests its options as you type.
  • Location: is within or is not within a number of miles of a town or postcode you pick, starting at 25 miles, or contains or does not contain words in the address. Someone whose address can't be placed on a map matches neither is within nor is not within.
A group rule picking people whose address is within 20 miles of Woodbridge.
A Location detail can pick people by distance from a town or postcode.

Data sets

A data set that's matched to each person gets its own heading in the list, with a rule for each of its columns. To match a set to your people, see Using data in groups and drips.

  • Words, Link and Image columns offer equals, does not equal, contains and does not contain.
  • Number and Money columns offer equals, does not equal, is more than and is less than.
  • Yes / no columns offer equals and does not equal. Choose Yes or No.
  • Date columns offer equals, is before, is after and is between. Type dd/mm/yyyy, or dd/mm for a date every year.

Someone with no matching row in the set doesn't match any rule on it, does not equal and does not contain included.

A drip's Condition split has its own list of fields. See Building a drip.
